With most species of tree, the best time to prune or fell is during the winter months, after all their autumn leaves have fallen but before the first buds of early spring. November, December and January are ideal times.

However, there are some species of tree that need to be pruned right after flowering to reduce infection. Others, such as walnut, birch and magnolia would need to be pruned in summer months from July onwards.
